One month in HK — The beginning or the ending of an academic life
One month is not a long time, but he sees and thinks a lot these days here. The newcomer and new graduate is more sensitive than others. For others, everything goes as usual; for him, this is the beginning of a new life. He can’t resist asking himself the same questions that he asked four years ago and tried to answer in the following four years,
Why do I come here?
Who will I become four years later?
Of course, he was a shy and not so smart boy, now such a man. If not, who else will have such stupid questions? All he wants is just a quiet place to read and think. He always holds this idea, no matter where he goes and what he does. But things do not turn out as one wishes.
As you, my dear friend, may know or hear about, everyone is busy with something in Hong Kong, a so called international prosperous city. At least, the people in his office are always busy with sharing gossip. The senior students don’t talk about research at lunch break, but all kinds of amazing stories of their boss. There are no professors here. Instead, all of them are called bosses. The difference is some bosses are very nice, which means their students can drink coffee and read newspaper in the office all day long and don’t need to worry about if they can get the degree or not. But other students are not so lucky. Their bosses push them hard to write paper.
Luckily or unluckily, the professors and students in his department published the most SCI-indexed papers world widely in their research filed. The most productive boss and their employees get dozens of papers published on the international journals. But our poor boy doesn’t see any value in it. They are all water posts (灌水贴), he believes.
Some nice guys he meets here suggest that he should give up obtaining doctor degree in any Hong Kong universities. It can hardly be a good place for any serious researchers. American or Europe may be a better choice. However, as you know, he is a shy and not so smart boy. How can he believe that he is able to get offers from the top universities? How can he believe that the bosses in the world are not the same (天下乌鸦不是一般黑)? How can he believe that…?
Moreover, both American and Europe are much too far for his mom and pap and their only child. Or the worst, maybe the best, he will quit and find a job and lead a simple but not so elegant life. The only thing he is sure of is that he still has a long long way to go. What do you think, my friend?
